Back to 1920's Chicago!

I have decided to start this new lesson by watching and listening to the famous King Oliver's Creole Jazz Band! Do you like jazz music? Can you name a famous jazzman? Can you play an instrument?

Joe "King" Oliver (December 19, 1881 – April 10, 1938) was a jazz cornet player and bandleader. He was the mentor and teacher of Louis Armstrong. His influence was such that Armstrong claimed, "if it had not been for Joe Oliver, Jazz would not be what it is today."

Louis Armstrong is probably the most famous jazzman for a majority of people. I'm pretty sure you know at least one of his music hits!

Click on the link below to read his biography... You may even listen to it if you feel like it! ;-)

Who is the band playing ? When ? Did you like it ? Why ? What instruments could you hear ? How many ? What do you think about the lyrics ?

For more videos, go on YouTube to listen to West End Blues, or Hotter than That.

While talking about the nightlife in Chicago, we'll also focus on "flappers', the very new modern woman in the 1920's!

In the 1920s, a new woman was born. She smoked, drank, danced, and voted. She cut her hair, wore make-up, and went to petting parties. She was giddy and took risks. She was a flapper.

What is Prohibition? Can you give examples of Americans' everyday life at that time?

Here is the Wikipedia link to read a definition of what was the Prohibition in the 1920's:

This article explains what is the 18th Amendment of the American Constitution, the one referring to the sale and drinking of alcohol in the US.
